Their have been a lot of changes and challenges in my life lately and their will be many more to come in the next few months
First and foremost is building the "Cabin" that will be my final home: not counting a hospital or nursing facility.
Small and very quaint, but with all modern appliances. A fireplace in the main room and a shooting DECK on the back :2TU:
And every project has to start somewhere Here We Go with !!!!
Clearing the drive so the construction trucks can get in

Image

The standing fireplace, you see, will be incorporated into the "Cabin"

There is a lot of work ahead but It will be fun

Another look at the site .
Image

Another look at the chimney
Image

Many more photos and a heck of a lot of work to come :) for a retirement "Cabin"

I hope you can see the plan in this picture

Image

if you can picture the small balcony on the upper level on the rear of the cabin looking south there is a clear shot picture of almost 500 yards that is 75 to 150 feet wide and food plots are planted

sorry for the 2 week delay in replying Yes the fireplace was in an old house that burned. I tried to salvage everything I could but, as it ended up, I could not salvage the old concrete slab except in the tractor shed.

Sure is...I love the fact that you're incorporating the old fireplace into the new cabin...That will be a great story for years to come.

The trusses are going up, It's a tough and SUPER HOT job for me J2 and Sonora Redneck but we will get there
Yes the chimney on the fireplace will have to be extended about 8 feet
Roof pitch is 11 in 12 and inside ceiling pitch is 8 in 12
There will be an upstairs 12 x 12 room at the rear

The truss builder built the overhang way too long it will be cut back to about a 16" horizontal overhang

Your truss builder did a good job on those scissor trusses, they appear well made and
out of good materials.

You may want to look into a rake overhang, not something you see everyday but efficent and economical. I'd leave the long tail ends over my exterior doors for weather protection for you and the doors.

Appears you going with a vertical siding with all those struts ...

What's a rake overhang?
There will be a covered porch at each exterior door
yes the siding is rough sawn red oak board and batten

a rake is just using the tail ends of the rafters as your overhang. Nail your subfascia on but instead of framing out for a horzontal soffitt you simply use the underside of the rafter to nail the soffitt to. Saves some time and money on materials ... I'll see if I can find some pics of what I'm describing for ya ...

The cabin is really taking shape and I sure like it! As a former president of a Homebuilders Assocation and a builder in the distant past, I think you will be very happy if you follow the advice regarding the rake roof approach. It is a good choice for a cabin, plus having at least a 12 inch overhang has many good benefits. The diagram he posted does not show any ventilation grates which you should install at the recommended spacing on the underside of the soffits. Be sure not to blow or stuff insulation over the ventilation spaces to block air movement. Since you will be using a standing seam metal roof system, and having a habitable room in the attic loft area, you will want to be sure the attic space is well ventilated to reduce the heat gain. You are really going to enjoy that cabin, I am sure!

Are you gonna deck it and felt it before you lathe it out? Not trying to get in your business but it will perform better and it could be insulated between the lathes. Do it for a living and won't put one up unless it is deck and felted out first. Give me a call if you have any questions and I will be glad to answer them.

Not decking it just lathes. The insulation will be at least 12 inches in the vault area
